Starting January 15, 2025, TikTok is pulling a disappearing act in the U.S. and will officially vanish like a magician's rabbit on Sunday, January 19, thanks to a federal law demanding it either gets sold or sent packing. This vanishing trick will leave about 170 million U.S. users wondering where all the dance challenges went. But fear not! When they open the app, a friendly notification will pop up like a helpful sidekick, letting them know about the shutdown and giving them a chance to download their precious data before TikTok takes its final bow.
The U.S. government has raised concerns that TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, presents national security risks, such as possible data access by the Chinese government and content manipulation. In response, legislation was passed in April 2024, mandating ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19, 2025, or face a total ban. ByteDance has challenged this law, arguing it violates the First Amendment and does not provide enough time to arrange a sale.
The Supreme Court recently considered arguments about the ban's constitutionality. During these sessions, the justices seemed to focus more on national security concerns than on free speech issues, suggesting they might uphold the ban.
With the impending shutdown, U.S. users are seeking other platforms. The Chinese app Xiaohongshu (RedNote) has become popular, although new users face challenges with language barriers and account setup. Other platforms drawing former TikTok users are Lemon8, Clapper, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat Spotlight, and Triller.
President-elect Donald Trump, who once supported a TikTok ban in his earlier term, has now voiced opposition to the current ban and is pursuing a political solution. However, since the ban is set to be implemented before his inauguration, the app's future is still unclear.
With the January 19 deadline nearing, TikTok users in the U.S. should get ready for the app's shutdown by downloading their data and looking into other platforms to maintain their social media activity.
